Synonyms

Ergot, Spurred rye, Devil’s grain, Claviceps purpurea.


Constituents

It is a fungus that grows in rye and other grasses. It contains alkaloids, ergotamine, and ergoline.  


Therapeutics

This is medicine for hypotension (Rauwolfia). 

It is medicine for depression.

It is medicine for excessive bleeding after abortion, and after childbirth. 

It is medicine for retained placenta (>30 minutes) due to uterine paralysis.

It is medicine for migraine, and headache due to vasodilation.

It is medicine for ventricular hypertrophy with weakness.

It is medicine for urine incontinence due to bladder paralysis.

It is medicine for shock (Relaxed sphincters, cool and relaxed skin, increased mucous secretions, hypotension, soft and rapid pulse).

It is remedy for hallucination, and schizophrenia.

It is remedy for convulsion, dystonia, and spasm of neck muscle.

It is remedy for diabetes, and impotence.

It is remedy for uterine spasm.

It is remedy for high blood pressure (Rauwolfia).

It is remedy for arteriosclerosis.

It is remedy for numbness in leg due to vasoconstriction, and gangrene in leg.

Rye is used in preparation of bread, chocolate and alcohol. Ergots on rye is increased when rain is high due to improper drainage of water. 40.000 people died in France from eating contaminated food grain in AD 944.
