Osteoporosis is the reduction in bone mass and density with loss of minerals and protein components. It is the common cause for hypercalcemia, cardiac irritability, renal insufficiency and secondary calcification in soft tissues in old age. Minerals of bones are not static. Calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, iron, potassium, sodium, chlorine, carbon, lithium, strontium, fluoride, manganese and silicon are the common minerals in bone. They are replaced about every 6 months in younger age. Generally, protein is high in muscle tissues (minerals less), less in fibrous ligaments and cartilages; and least in hard bones (minerals are high in bone).

Composition of the cement and bone are about similar. Ingredients of cement are Calcium oxide - 65%, silicon oxide -25%, aluminum oxide-  5%, ferro oxide -5% and a touch of sulphate.

Causes of osteoporosis

Steroids excess.

Hyperadrenalism.

Hyperthyroidism. 

Hyperpituitarism.

Hypogonadism.

Menopausal hormone failure.

Immobilization of body parts.

Senility.

Deficiency of minerals.

            Indigestion due to stress.

            Intestinal malabsorption.

            Leak of minerals through urine.

Calcium deficiency. Calcium absorption is decreased in intake of excess of animal protein, oxalic acid (Spinach, chocolate and tomato), and phytic acid (Wheat and oats) items. Soft water, distilled water, aluminum, antacids, sodium bicarbonate, lactose deficiency etc can inhibit calcium absorption. Low gastric acidity developed due to intake of sweets and refined carbohydrate can facilitate formation of insoluble calcium.

Deficiency of vitamin D (Poor sunlight, and black skin), vitamin C, and vitamin A.

Deficiency of Mg (whole grains, and green leaves).

Deficiency of protein (Vegetarian in origin), Albumin, Keratin and Thyrocalcitonin.

Phosphorus excess (Meat, soda drinks, and processed food). 

Decreased ratio of calcium and phosphorus in food.

Changes in earth gravity.

Toxicity from alcohol, fluoride, tobacco (low blood pH), copper, lead, radium, mercury, arsenic, aluminum (Hyperparathyroidism), cadmium, high Co2.

Pregnancy metabolites.

Acidosis.

Drugs: Synthetic steroids, tetracycline, and anticonvulsants (loss of liver enzymes).

Primary biliary cirrhosis.

Symptoms

Common symptoms are constant bone pain, tender spine, back pain, low backache, and muscle spasm. Stone formation of  calcium and silica in kidney and bile duct; spontaneous micro fracture, reduction of bone mass in x - ray; shortening of trunk height, kyphosis, parathyroid adenoma are other features. (Tetany and biconcave reduction of vertebrae in X- ray are common features in osteomalacia. Osteomalacia is reduction in minerals in young; osteoporosis is reduction of bone volume).

Blood

Transient hypercalcemia (short QT interval in ECG, and thrombosis in vein), Hypocalcaemia (tetany, flabby muscles, and tension headache), and increased alkaline phosphatase may be seen.

Urine

Excess of deposits (Genito-urinary stone more in hypogonadism).

Prevention 

Take adequate supply of minerals during childhood and adolescence. 

Daily requirement of Calcium is about 800 mg per day. 

Protective measures from trauma and fracture. 

Preventive measures against early menopause.

Avoid soft drinks contaminated with Cadmium (It is related to inner coating of soft drink containers) and Phosphoric acid.

Avoid excess sodium.

Avoid drugs (Steroid, Tetracycline, Anti-epileptic, Antacids, and Aluminum).

Prefer a diet that includes protein, albumen, Magnesium (green vegetables), Vitamin D (egg yolk and fish oil).

Prefer a little lemon juice or vinegar for calcium absorption.

Take vegetables and barley water to correct alkalosis. 

Maintain optimum weight or slight over weight (body gravity). 

 Avoid conditions that lead to prolonged immobilization (fracture or stroke).

Practice breathing exercise. 

Increase physical activity.

Prefer sea bath and sunbath (vitamin D).

Correct renal tubular dysfunction if present.

Osteoporosis is the 

result of an acidic condition. Sulphur is the homeopathic remedy in hot, dry, and acidic conditions. Sulphur normally presents in micro level in body. Hb, rennin, B1, insulin, cartilage, muscle, bone, and connective tissues etc contain sulphur. It acts as anti oxidants in micro level (Selenium). It has electro negative ve property. Its usual allergic symptoms are bowel complaints < in morning and chest complaints < in evening. It is present in onions, mustard, cabbage, asafetida, ginger, egg, and animal food. 

Deficiency of calcium may cause inflammation, scrofulosis, tubercle formation (hectic fever, sweat), calcification, or abscess formation in susceptible individuals. Acid tubercle may be formed following abscess, pox, or acid discharges etc set in. Excess of silica can promote tubercle degeneration in presence of low calcium (Acid microbes eat the acid tubercle). Prime cause for  early osteoporosis and bone degeneration is acidosis due to toxins.

Silicea 8X, Calcium fluoride 8X, Lobelia 8X, and Lachesis 8X. 

Silicea 8x is the prime remedy in osteoporosis, tuberculosis, atherosclerosis, stone formation, diseases of inner coating of aorta, and arteritis (Thuja 8X is main remedy in alkali tubercle, polyp, exostosis, warts, and skin tags). 

Silicea is present in herbs like Absinthium, Equisetum, Lupulus and Tritica repens. It is also present in barley, beer, oats, maize, cucumber, tobacco, tomatoes, rice bran, cane sugar, bamboo, banana, egg white and mussels. Excess of silica may promote stone formation in susceptible individuals.
