Constituents

Perennial pant. Height 2 meters. Leaves contain solanine, and tomatine. The alkaloids common in solanum fruits are absent in tomato. Fruits have umami taste and contain lycopene.

Word “tomata” (Spanish) means swelling fruit. Word “lyco” means wolf, and word “persicum” means peach.
